2024 Annual Report

A 2024 study highlights the housing challenges foster youth face in college, especially during summer and winter breaks when campus housing closes.

EDUCATION & FOSTER KIDS

The rate of college completion among youth with foster care experience is significantly low. Approximately half of former foster youth graduate from high school, with only 2% to 6% obtaining an associate degree and 3% to 4% earning a bachelor’s degree. See National Foster Youth Institute.

HOMELESSNESS

In the United States, young people at high risk for poor educational outcomes include those who have experienced homelessness and those who have faced both homelessness and involvement in foster care. Youth with a foster care history are particularly vulnerable, experiencing disproportionately high rates of homelessness (Berzin et al., 2011; Courtney and Dworsky, 2006; Dworsky and Courtney, 2009; Dworsky et al., 2013).
